“Bush politeness” is a term Marie-Louise von Franz uses metaphorically. She’s describing an ancient social ritual — a cautious, formal politeness that evolved among people living in wild or potentially dangerous environments (like the bush). 

When strangers met in such places, there was always uncertainty: Is this person friend or foe?So they developed rituals to manage fear and prevent violence — stopping a safe distance away, laying down weapons, bowing, and slowly approaching each other. These gestures said: “I mean no harm. You can trust me.” It was a way to make contact without triggering danger.

Von Franz uses this image to describe modern psychological and social behavior. In today’s world, bush politeness isn’t about spears — it’s about emotional weapons. We still perform cautious rituals to avoid conflict or rejection: we smile, stay “nice,” make small talk, and hide what we truly feel or think. Many friendships, partnerships, and families function like this for their entire lives. This polite distance maintains peace on the surface but prevents genuine closeness.

Under the Libra New Moon, this polite mask can’t hold — because it squares Pluto and Jupiter. Masks slip! Spears you thought were lowered are revealed for what they really are: defense, not grace.

True peace isn’t polite. True peace is truth meeting truth — even if it shakes everything.

This New Moon is opposite our wounded healer, Chiron, in Aries, which speaks to the fear of asserting ourselves in relationships and expressing ourselves freely.

And Chiron’s ruler, Mars, is conjunct Black Moon Lilith and Mercury — translation: raw, primal truth and a desire for intimacy, vulnerability, and merging are breaking the sound barrier.

Add to that: this New Moon squares Pluto (now direct) and Jupiter in Cancer — which, by the way, Libra answers to. There’s no fake kumbaya here. Libra may crave balance — but Pluto doesn’t do polite, and Mars + Mercury with Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio don’t do denial.

Libra is the sign of all our relationships, and this New Moon calls for a meeting of two truths: open, unarmed, and fully recognized — without defense.
