Venus square Pluto + Venus retrograde

Venus’s Journey

Between the end of August and the middle of December 2026, Venus moves through her retrograde zone, retracing the same area of the zodiac (and your Natal chart) and weaving together the themes of Scorpio and Libra: depth, intimacy, desire, attachment, values, reciprocity and our relationship with others.

This is Venus’s journey back through what we think we want, so that we can begin to see what truly lies beneath our desire.

And as Venus encounters Pluto in Aquarius through these squares, questions of love, attachment, control, freedom, and self-worth can become especially intense.

And what happens when what we long for most deeply simultaneously touches our deepest fear?

The Desire

The desire is not a superficial thing.

There are two types of desire. There is the desire to separate from Source, for the Soul to experience individuality, security, control, love, sexuality, identity, power, belonging and all the different experiences that become possible through separation.

And there is the deeper desire to return to Source, which means gradually exhausting the need for separation and beginning to recognize a deeper unity underneath the experience of individuality.

This is where Venus becomes very important.

Venus in Scorpio desires emotional and sexual depth, complete honesty, intensity, psychological revealing, loyalty and transformation through intimacy. There is a desire to go beneath the surface of things, to know and be known completely, and to experience a kind of intimacy in which nothing essential remains hidden.

But the shadow of this can also become very strong. And squares can bring shadows to the surface.

There can be a fear of loss, jealousy, emotional control and manipulation, together with the feeling that love has to be intense enough to completely transform us in order to be real. When love is experienced with this much intensity, it can become difficult to tell the difference between genuine intimacy and the feeling of being completely consumed by another person. We may mistake emotional intensity for depth, or the feeling of losing ourselves in someone for true closeness.

In this way, Venus in Scorpio can associate love with transformation – not simply through intimacy, but through the intensity of the experience itself.

So the point is to learn to distinguish between being truly intimate with someone and simply being completely overwhelmed by the intensity of the relationship.

And then comes Pluto in Aquarius.

Here the story turns toward another evolutionary necessity. Whatever Pluto touches — it transforms.

Pluto in Aquarius speaks about themes of individuality, freedom, objectivity, the collective, our relationship to groups, different ways of connecting, liberation from old structures and the possibility of being fully yourself without having to organize your identity around belonging or fitting in.
Pluto shows what the Soul is being asked to transform.

So, when Pluto forms a stressful aspect to Venus, the evolutionary pressure enters directly into the way we love, attach, value ourselves and attempt to satisfy our emotional needs through another person.
This is where the experience can arise that what we want the most is also what scares us the most.
We can deeply desire intimacy while being afraid that intimacy will make us lose ourselves. We can want complete trust and, at the same time, feel the need to control the relationship so that we do not have to experience the vulnerability that comes with truly trusting another person. We can want to merge with someone emotionally and sexually while another part of us is desperately trying to preserve its freedom and individuality.
We can want emotional security and then find ourselves in circumstances that force us to develop a deeper sense of security within ourselves. We can want a “fated” love and still have to learn that the intensity of a bond does not make another person our possession.

This is where one of the deeper Venus–Pluto themes comes into play.

It speaks to the process of learning to recognize and understand our own needs, and gradually developing the ability to meet those needs ourselves. Rather than unconsciously relying on another person to make us feel worthy, chosen or whole, or to give us a sense of who we are, we gradually learn to cultivate those qualities within ourselves.

There’s a profound difference between needing another person to complete us and choosing to share what we already have within ourselves with someone else.
Venus wants relationship.

Venus wants connection, intimacy, pleasure, affection and the experience of sharing ourselves with another.
But the evolutionary movement now is toward a different kind of relationship with those needs.

A relationship can become a place where two people meet each other deeply without making the other person responsible for everything they have not yet learned to give themselves.

And this is why Venus–Pluto can feel so intense.

The desire can activate everything that is unresolved around love, attachment, security, value and loss. The person we desire can become the person who brings our deepest fears to the surface, precisely because the relationship touches something that has been waiting to become conscious.

Sometimes what we experience as love can contain a fear of abandonment. Sometimes what we call passion can also contain the need to control the intensity of the bond because the possibility of loss feels unbearable.

And this is where the evolutionary work begins – with becoming conscious of what we are actually asking another person to give us.

The question is what happens to us when we love deeply.

🕯️ Can we experience intimacy without turning intimacy into possession?
🕯️ Can we allow vulnerability without needing to control the other person?
🕯️ Can we love someone deeply while still allowing them to remain a separate individual?

We are dealing with what is underneath the wanting.
This is why what we want most can also be what scares us most.

If we place ourselves in the position of an observer of our own desire, we may be able to understand the very nature of that desire.
And once that becomes conscious, the relationship begins to serve a different purpose.

We can go as deeply as possible into love without losing the awareness that the other person is still other, and that true intimacy does not require the destruction of individuality.

That is a very different kind of intimacy.

The journey of Venus retrograde is, in many ways, a purification of desire — a stripping away of what we have unconsciously attached to love, so that we can come closer to what we truly long for and learn to build more authentic relationships.

Blessings on the journey.
